GAF 101 and GAF 201
We are pleased to announce two pre-conference workshops to be held in conjunction with the GAF9 (Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries) conference.
Both workshops will be held at the GAF9 venue (AIT Conference Center) on Monday, September 30, 2025. Registration is limited to 40 participants each, on a first-come first-served basis.
Time: 8:00 AM-12:00 PM
Gender work is vital to aquaculture and fisheries research and development planning. Yet, deep, theoretically informed gender analysis in the fisheries and aquaculture sector remains limited. The objective of this half-day pre-conference workshop is to enhance capacity for gender analysis in the sector through the introduction of basic concepts of gender theory and their application in fisheries and aquaculture food systems. The workshop will cover basic concepts and approaches to conducting gender research and include case study and small group hands-on exercises. Participants will develop an understanding of why a gender perspective is important, identify key elements of robust gender analysis in aquaculture and fisheries research, and gain tools for integrating gender awareness and analysis in research and development planning within the aquaculture and fisheries sector.
Time: 1:30-5:00 PM
Intended for participants who already possess a basic understanding of gender analysis in fisheries and aquaculture research, this two-part workshop provides a deeper dive into specific topics related to gender.
Part I: Designing Gender-Informed Household Studies (1:30-3:00 PM)
This workshop focuses on feminist approaches to household studies and how they may be applied to research in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. It will cover different theories of the household and gendered models of household analysis. Participants will then gain hands-on experience in designing a household survey from a feminist, gender-informed perspective.
Part II: Gender-Informed Value Chain Analysis (3:30-5:00 PM)
Value chain analysis has become prevalent in social science research within aquaculture and fisheries in recent years. Incorporating a gender perspective into such work lends important insight into how value chains function and may be improved to benefit all actors within this sector. Through instructional content and a small group exercise, this workshop advances understanding of the way valued chains are gendered and offers participants an approach informed by feminist commodity chain analysis for integrating gender analysis into value chain research.
